Summer 2007 News Update
Message from the President
Summer
Greetings! I am so glad to share with you
the latest news from Keep Johnston County
Beautiful. We have had a very eventful year
with the third successful Festival of Trees,
the near-conclusion of the Historical
Architectural Survey, the Youth
Environmental Poster Contest, and our booth
at the Ham and Yam Festival which featured
our ant-litter campaign. Thanks goes out to
our dedicated volunteers who made these
things happen. One of our goals in 2008 is
to expand our membership and increase our
volunteer base. Please share with your
friends and family the good things that Keep
Johnston County Beautiful is doing to help
make Johnston County a better place to live
and encourage them to join our band wagon.
Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable summer!

Festival of Trees
Keep
Johnston County Beautiful’s “2006 Festival
of Trees” was a great success! With over 56
decorated Christmas trees and 75
entertainment features, we tallied over
15,000 guests to have visited during the
times our hosts and hostesses were on duty.
A special thank you goes to Johnston
Memorial Hospital for their sponsorship and
support. We are currently planning for the
2007 Festival of Trees which is scheduled
for Nov. 29 - Dec. 9. Our planning
committee will meet August 2 and begin
recruiting tree sponsors. If you or someone
you know would like to be a tree sponsor or
tree decorator we will be glad to give you a
sponsor packet. As our subcommittees expand
to address more detailed items, we need many
more volunteers to help. If you are
interested in assisting with the 2007
Festival of Trees, please call Sarah Ann
Sasser at 934-7433, Jayne Cubilla at
989-5380 or me at 934-7156 ext.3. There
are many opportunities to be involved.

Ham and Yam Festival

Keep Johnston County Beautiful’s Booth at
the Ham and Yam Festival was a big hit. A
special thanks to our County Commissioners
and their wives, Ray and Ruth Woodall and
Tony and Nobie Braswell for joining us to
get the anti-litter message out to
citizens. Mary Britt, Lou and Billy
Woodard, Deborah Jackson, Don Stephenson and
Sarah Ann Sasser were instrumental in
passing out brochures and tattooing children
with the Swat-A-Litterbug tattoos. This
anti-litter campaign was a small component
of the larger litter awareness campaign
during the Litter Prevention Awareness Week
sponsored by NC-DOT. |

Historical Architectural Survey Publication
“They didn’t build Rome in a day,” the adage
goes. And so it is with the publication of
the Historical Landscape and Architectural
Survey of Johnston County. This eight-month
project that is now in its fifth year is
finally coming to a close. The survey has
been completed and hired Landscape and
Architectural Historian, Nancy Van Dolsen,
is in the final stages of completing the
written work including the introductory
essay, town and township chapters, property
descriptions, glossary and scanning photos.
Our hopes are to have the 500+-page book
published in 2008. Based on Nancy Van
Dolsen’s progress, we hope to have pre-sales
for the books this fall. We are also
accepting tax deductible sponsorships from
businesses, individuals and organizations to
assist with publication costs. We are
collaborating with the Johnston County
Heritage Center to feature the “Historical
“Survey” as part of their Road Show in the
near future.

Youth Environmental Poster Contest
The Town of Smithfield and
the Smithfield Appearance Commission have
been displaying the winning posters from the
Youth Environmental Poster Contest in the
Johnston County Public Library in Smithfield
and among the vacant store fronts in
downtown Smithfield this summer. The
Smithfield Appearance Commission is one of
our newest members and we are happy to have
them on board. We had record contest
participation this year with almost 1,000
students creating posters on anti-litter
messages, recycling, beautification and
environmental awareness in Johnston County.

Last year Americans threw
away 38 billion plastic water bottles into
our landfills. The plastic bottles are made
of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which is
totally recyclable. It takes about 450
years for plastic to decompose in the
environment. Please recycle and/or reuse
your plastic water bottles!
